SMB Challenges with AI Implementation

Cost, security, and training are the top SMB concerns

February 21, 2025

Many SMBs have implemented AI, and are seeing substantial benefits. However many SMBs, especially smaller ones, are still in the investigation stage. To find out what’s keeping those SMBs from implementing AI, we recently surveyed them on what they expect the challenges of implementing AI will be.

For very small businesses (VSBs, with 1-19 employees), a lack of a clear AI strategy is the biggest implementation challenge. After that, cost, security/compliance, and technical problems are top concerns.

For small businesses (SBs, with 20-99 employees), the cost of AI is the biggest challenge. Their other top concerns are a lack of a clear AI strategy, result usability and accuracy, and training. Like SBs, a top concern for midsized businesses (MBs, with 100-500 employees) is the expected cost of AI. However, MBs are equally worried that training end users will be difficult or time-consuming. They are also concerned about security and compliance.
