What are SMB payroll challenges, and what’s important to them in a payroll solution? To find out, we recently surveyed  500 U.S. and 100 UK SMB principals.

Of the SMBs that have payroll challenges, the top challenge varies by headcount. Compliance with tax regulations is the biggest headache for U.S. very small businesses (VSBs, or those with fewer than 20 employees). For U.S. small businesses (SBs, with 20 to 99 employees) and U.K. SMBs, it’s staying current on regulations. For U.S. midsize businesses (MBs, with 100-500 employees), it’s dealing with payroll errors.

However, SMBs are consistent in what they want from a payroll solution, which is ease of use. That’s the most-desired feature across all segments (although SBs equally want accuracy and reliability). Accuracy is second for VSBs, while data security is second for MBs, and cost-effectiveness is second for U.K. SMBs.
