Is SMB Use of AI Declining?

July 7, 2026

Our June survey of 500 U.S. SMB principals found that active AI use has declined, continuing a trend we identified in January. Notably, the bigger the SMB, the bigger the decline. Active use of AI by very small businesses (VSBs, less than 20 employees) has fallen five points since November. For small businesses (SBs, with 20 to 99 employees), the decline is nine points; for midsized businesses (MBs, with 100 to 1,000 employees), 17 points.

We’ll continue to assess this trend and its potential causes such as payback concerns, tool consolidation, or implementation challenges.
